Salem Heights May Day Rally: Standing with Workers

TROTWOOD, Ohio — Catholic Sisters belonging to the Sisters of the Precious Blood religious community will gather for a May Day solidarity rally at Salem Heights, the community’s central house at 4960 Salem Avenue, on International Workers’ Day (May 1) at 3:00 p.m. Staff members with the Congregation will also join the rally as we stand in unity and appreciation of workers.

This local gathering is part of a broader day of action. Around the world, International Workers’ Day is celebrated much like Labor Day in the U.S. — honoring the dignity of work and the contributions of workers everywhere. This year, communities are also using the day to lift up shared concerns and hopes for a more just society.

In Dayton, a Workers Over Billionaires Rally will take place at Courthouse Square from 4:00–6:00 p.m. Participants will gather to bring attention to issues such as peace, economic fairness and democracy.

Many cities will host May 1 marches and actions including “No Work, No School, No Shopping” efforts aimed at highlighting the vital role of the working class around the world. Our rally at Salem Heights will join those voices. The Sisters of the Precious Blood acknowledge the good, compassionate work of their employees. Rooted in and motivated by faith — and the Catholic Church’s principles of ethical living known as Catholic Social Teaching — we are compelled to uphold the dignity and rights of workers.

The Sisters of the Precious Blood were founded in Switzerland by Maria Anna Brunner in 1834 and currently minister throughout the U.S. and in Chile. Their central house has been located on Salem Avenue in Trotwood since 1923.
