Experience the beauty and peace of the Sorrowful Mother Shrine’s outdoor chapel

Nestled among the rolling countryside of northwest Ohio, the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue offers visitors a peaceful, 158-acre sanctuary where faith, prayer, and the beauty of God’s creation come together. With more than 50 prayer grottos, outdoor Stations of the Cross, wooded walking paths, and a historic chapel, the shrine has welcomed pilgrims seeking hope, healing, and spiritual renewal for more than 175 years. 

At the heart of the shrine stands one of its most beloved landmarks: the magnificent outdoor chapel. Surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of nature, it provides a unique setting to celebrate the Eucharist and spend time in prayer and reflection. 

The vision for the chapel began under the leadership of Father Joseph Lipinski, C.PP.S., who served as shrine director from 1958 to 1972. Construction began in 1967 and was completed the following year by local contractor Janotta & Herner at a cost of approximately $150,000. Every dollar was donated by faithful pilgrims whose generosity made the project possible. 

On July 14, 1968, more than 2,000 people gathered for the chapel’s dedication. Bishop John A. Donovan of the Diocese of Toledo blessed the chapel, and the Very Reverend John Byrne, Provincial Director of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, delivered the dedication homily. 

The chapel has been carefully maintained and enhanced through the years. In the early 1980s, a Pietà statue was installed on the lawn, and the sacristy was renovated. In preparation for the shrine’s 150th anniversary, the front roof beams were replaced in 1999, and in 2007 the original wooden seating was replaced with durable metal benches. 

Another major renovation took place in 2023. The original mosaic window was replaced with a stained-glass image of the Sorrowful Mother holding the body of Jesus. Repairs to the roof, fascia, gutters, and downspouts were completed, and the confessionals were renovated and climate-controlled to provide a welcoming setting for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. 

These improvements were completed under the leadership of Father James Seibert, C.PP.S., rector, and Marsha Danhoff, director of operations. Janotta & Herner completed the construction work, and the stained-glass window was designed by Window Creations of Ottoville, Ohio. Once again, generous donors made the project possible. 

The outdoor chapel also served as the centerpiece of the shrine’s 175th anniversary celebration, which opened Sept. 15, 2024, with Mass celebrated by the Very Reverend Jeffrey Kirch, C.PP.S., Provincial Director of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, and concluded Sept. 14, 2025, with a closing Mass celebrated by Bishop Daniel E. Thomas of the Diocese of Toledo. 

Today, the outdoor chapel continues to fulfill its purpose as a sacred place where people encounter Christ, experience God’s peace, and deepen their faith. During the summer, Mass is celebrated there on Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Visitors are invited to pray, reflect, and experience the beauty and serenity that have drawn generations of pilgrims to the Sorrowful Mother Shrine.We look forward to welcoming you soon.
