PBMR’s Urban Farm supports community

Throughout this harvest season, the PBMR Urban Farm has hosted a Garden-to-Table Cooking & Nutrition Program: a weekly 10-course guide on meal preparation, food sourcing, and medicinal values of the fruits, vegetables, and herbs available here. With the support of our friends at Felician Services, our families and neighbors have been learning under the tutelage of Chef Q, who runs an award-winning fine dining staff at Teerts Emases Ottehg here on the south side of Chicago. Our team has made garden spring rolls, turkey meatballs, gumbo, and much more, using freshly picked produce from our farm! At the end of September, we’ll be hosting some of our friends and supporters for a dinner in the farm among the very plants that made the meal.

This harvest season is our first with a full-time farm manager. Fredo’s family has long been involved with PBMR, and he first came to the center tagging along with his older brother. After getting his high school diploma through our Education Lab, he earned a Certificate in Sustainable Urban Agriculture from the Chicago Botanic Garden, bringing skills that were crucial for the recent growth of our farm as a neighborhood staple.

The seeds that Sister Carolyn planted in a parking lot are growing into healthy, delicious meals for our families. Thank you for the support that helps keep our garden growing.

You can donate to the PBMR Urban Farm to help us give more produce to our neighbors at PBMR.org
