Robert (Bob) Scherger made his first Covenant as a Precious Blood Companion at the community’s annual assembly in June 2026. Bob’s strong foundation of faith was provided by his family, Delphos St. John’s High School in northwest Ohio, and his Jesuit education at Xavier University. Upon that foundation, Bob will build St. Gaspar’s message of outreach. He says, “My dad, Louis Scherger, and my wife, Polly, gave me the courage and tangible spiritual tools to detect and approach anyone with any kind of need. Both my dad and Polly are deceased, but their spirit has fortified my courage to be a Companion and serve any one in need.”
Bob has graciously shared a reflection based on his recent covenant. Please enjoy his words.
As a 1979 graduate of Xavier University with a degree in accounting, the courses in philosophy, theology, economics, and political science defined my spiritual structure. At the core, I believe we humans are proof of a transcendent factor in corporeal form. As such, every human is born in our own time, but every human dies at precisely the same time from immemorial through perpetuity. I believe more in the preservation of our souls than resurrection of our bodies, because if we use our bodies according to God’s law, attaining eternal life will be seamless.
This means every human will cross the “finish line” simultaneously, and purgation of all souls will begin. While on Earth, humans had many opportunities to advocate and support one another. In the next life, we will be called upon to bear credible witness for each other. God as supreme being in a Holy Trinity will decide the remedy for our souls.
Some will be sentenced to hell. A few will be invited unconditionally into heaven’s eternal life, while the remaining souls will require time in purgatory for cleansing. God the
Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit provided us with the tools for a journey where we travel with one foot on Earth, and the other foot in a transcendent mode of discovery.
I look at Christ on the cross as naked, suffering, bleeding, abandoned, and humiliated. He chose to have his precious blood poured out for us as a way for us humans to achieve happiness in eternal life. He is not some kind of “macho man,” embracing punishment with the idea of attaining some kind retribution in the future. We humans must be living life, supporting each other in every facet of humanity to do ultimate good at all times, thereby moving Satan to the unemployment line.
Throughout my professional life, I entered into many threatening situations that I resolved peacefully, developing a rapport with the people I served. Saint Gaspar and the Society of the Precious Blood gives me more fodder in my apostolic mission and journey.
As a Companion, I will steadfastly continue to live a life of fast and prayer, devoted to receiving the Eucharist regularly and experiencing the sacrament of Reconciliation routinely. I will continue to strive to make the Robert & Polly Scherger Donor Advised Fund an economic power for spiritual good.
