Calumet College of St. Joseph update October 2025
Our new academic year began on Aug. 21 with a new student orientation. There was also a session for parents, which has grown in numbers in the three years we have done this. On Aug. 22, we held “Wave Day,” which is a day to welcome our student athletes, to introduce staff, and to review rules and procedures. We also had a blessing and commissioning of our student athletes and coaches. We almost filled St Adalbert’s Church with our student athletes. As one student who read the scripture said as he approached the ambo, “Man, there’s a lot of people here.” Later that evening, there was a dinner for our sprint football team at which time they were presented their conference championship rings for the second time in as many years.
During the first week of classes, we had a number of social events to assist students in getting to know one another and have fun. One day there was a snow cone truck here to supply an icy treat for all. There was also a gathering at the Lake Michigan beach, complete with a nice bonfire. We also began a new class schedule this year, which gives us midday break on Monday and Wednesday to have special events and/or special gatherings. A number of organizations and clubs used this time to recruit new members to their organizations and hold meetings.
We again began our academic year with a special Mass of the Holy Spirit in our Chapel as we prayed for a successful start to the new academic year. It was a nice little gathering of faculty, staff, and students.
From mid-September to mid-October we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. There were and continue to be events celebrating Hispanic Heritage, such as food, arts, movies and an office door decorating contest.
Our enrollment is up this year by 60 students for a total of 718 undergrad and graduate students. We also had a little over 82% of undergrad students who were enrolled last spring return this fall.
Our various grant funded construction projects continue. Work on the seventh floor is moving along, although probably not as quickly as we would like. We are still waiting for the work on the elevators to commence. Work has started on replacing the south-facing windows of our six-story building. There is also a new C.PP.S. tribute wall by the Chapel. Our presence in other countries is noted on a map as well as a list of all the C.PP.S. members who worked here at CCSJ.
