Night and day difference
God made the two great lights,
the greater one to govern the day,
and the lesser one to govern the night,
and the stars. Genesis 1:16
Easter is a feast of night and day differences. The dark despair of grieving gives way to the great joy of the dawn. It is a slow realization among the disciples of Jesus; one might say that “it dawned on them.” And in their place, we might feel the same way—dazed and full of dread at what has just happened, and unable to rely on the simple reports that he is risen.
We would not take anyone’s word upon hearing the wondrous news. We would want to see for ourselves the empty tomb, the rock rolled away, resurrection apparent in the light of day.
Having been through a time of trial with the whole Church, let us welcome the news of Easter: that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, that we need no longer fear death because he has kept this solemn promise that he would die and return. He is with us today and every day, in the brightness of noon and the darkness of midnight. He is our light and our leader into a land where death is just a doorway, and his love is eternal.
